Aquilani in Italy back

Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani is set to be loaned to a club back in his native Italy.

Aquilani has struggled to make an impact at Anfield since his arrival from £ 20 million Roma last summer. The 26-year-old was signed by former Reds manager Rafael Benitez as a replacement for the influential Xabi Alonso, but his first season on Merseyside was hampered by injuries.

Aquilani is not included in selection for Liverpool last night of the UEFA Europa League playoff against Trabzonspor and discussions are continuing about a possible relocation. Current boss Roy Hodgson said: "At the moment we may consider lending it to an Italian club, but nothing is certain, that yet so I have nothing concrete to report.

"I did not want (to be used against Trabzonspor) only in the loan goes door, because Aquilani this year is very important that he frequently football every week is, as the number one man on the team sheet. I can 't promise him that here so if a loan move to Italy would help him in that respect may be good for all parties.

"It would certainly be what he needs, it would certainly be the value of protecting the player and when he return to doubt we will see that we signed Aquilani before he came to Liverpool last year injured."

Aquilani had a history of injury problems when he joined Liverpool and it was more than two months into last season before he made his debut for the club. Hodgson has no indication that he could join Italian club, but he was linked with Juventus - Liverpool who has just signed midfielder Christian Poulsen - earlier in the year.
