Suazo dropped for Ukraine friendly

Humerto Suazo has been left out of Marcelo Bielsa's Chile squad to face Ukraine in a friendly on 7 September, while 26-year-old Palermo forward Mauricio Pinilla has been drafted in after four years in the international wilderness.

Aquilani in Italy back

Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani is set to be loaned to a club back in his native Italy.

Aquilani has struggled to make an impact at Anfield since his arrival from £ 20 million Roma last summer. The 26-year-old was signed by former Reds manager Rafael Benitez as a replacement for the influential Xabi Alonso, but his first season on Merseyside was hampered by injuries.

Mancini: dismiss Balotelli

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini says he can work with Mario Balotelli and that criticism of his new striker is out of order.

Mancini's attitude contrasts with that of Jose Mourinho. The former Inter Milan coach was often left exasperated by the 20-year-old's actions last season and reportedly claimed the player was unmanageable. Mourinho has moved to charge from Real Madrid to take while Balotelli he could make his debut at Timisoara in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday with Roque Santa Cruz left the team.

Mourinho Calls Real Silverware

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho will keep in his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu an error if the title, the Spanish giants of the Premier League or the Champions League win.

Madrid have failed to win the Primera Division since 2007 and lifted its last Champions League trophy in 2002, but Mourinho calls the club the trophy drought has come to an end. "If we do not win the league or the Champions League (season), it would be a mistake," he said.

World Cup 2010 News Update: A reward for Uruguayan football

If there was one thing lacking from Diego Forlan’s stellar performance here at the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ it was a piece of silverware, particularly after the deadly striker just missed out on clinching the adidas Golden Shoe for the competition’s top scorer. No matter, the inspirational Uruguayan No10 instead made off with the coveted adidas Golden Ball – awarded to the finest player at this year’s finals on South African soil.

Forlan thus becomes the fourth South American to claim the prize, following in the footsteps of Argentina’s Diego Maradona (1986) and Brazilian duo Romario (1994) and Ronaldo (1998). Just minutes after learning of his award, the Atletico Madrid hitman spoke exclusively to FIFA.com.

FIFA.com: Diego, how does it feel to have won the Golden Ball?
Diego Forlan: It’s as great as it is unexpected. I never even imagined something like this, nor did I have my sights set on it. As I’m a striker, I perhaps

Iniesta puts Spain on top of the world - Spain celebrate winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Final

Champions of Europe and now champions of the world, Spain captured football's Holy Grail for the first time with a 1-0 victory over the Netherlands thanks to Andres Iniesta's 116th-minute strike at Soccer City.

The solitary goal came with penalties looming as substitute Cesc Fabregas played in Iniesta and the little midfielder drove emphatically across Maarten Stekelenburg and into the far corner. With this victory – their fourth successive single-goal win in South Africa – Spain became the eighth name on the FIFA World Cup™ Trophy and also the first European team to have triumphed on a different continent. For the Netherlands, who lost defender John Heitinga to a red card in extra time, there is only the heartache of another tale of what might have been after they completed a hat-trick of Final losses.
